The purpose of this book is two-fold. First, it is to help followers maximize their ability to support leaders as they together pursue organizational objectives. Secondly, and just as importantly, Dr. Murray shows leaders what makes a good follower so they can cultivate the followership characteristics in their followers that will help them maximize the potential of each follower in their organization.

In both his book and his lecture, Dr. Murray not only draws from his own experience as both a leader and a follower, but he draws from renowned theorists and frameworks such as Chaleff’s Model, Kelley’s Model, Zaleznik’s Model, and Kellerman’s Model.
